Raking, though sometimes faster, does indeed take some practice to learn how to do it effectively. It's good that you're learning single pin picking first. Basicaly you should expose yourself to as many techniques and picks as possible when you're starting, then choose what you like and specialize in it. I use one hook, and one rake. With these two picks (and a large variety of tension wrenches) I can open almost any lock I happen accross.
