newbie key code question

Postby New York Novice » 26 Jul 2004 11:52

Is it correct to assume that the masterlock pad lock I just bought to practice on which has a key code of Pxxxx means that there are just 4 pins? and the house keys in my pocket that have 5 0r 6 numbers stamped on them represent 5 or 6 pin locks?

thanks

Mike,

Welcome!

Most Master locks that I've seen do have only 4 pins but its not
the 4 digit code that tells you that. Master lock uses what they
call INDIRECT codes which basically means Master keeps a big list
of the codes that tells them how to cut the pins for a particular code.
It doesnt match pin by pin. Even tho your probably right that it
has 4 pins its not the code that tells you that in this case.

Your house lock may use a direct code so if thats the case then
if it has 4 digits it would have 5 pins. If its not a direct code then thered
be no way to tell.

Hope this helps

Typo in above msg on your house lock: if it's a direct code with
5 digits it would have 5 pins. (Not 4 like I typed bad fingers
from too much picking I guess!)
