Need help cutting a Schlage key

Postby cacciato » 17 Nov 2004 1:27

Hi,

I am really new to this.

So, I have Schlage "E" key blanks. I've tried my hand at manually filing them, but that hasn't gone so well.

Can anyone recommend a relatively inexpensive key cutting machine that can work by code alone? Here are the Schlage codes I found over the internet:

SCHLAGE

SHOULDER TO FIRST CUT: .231''
CENTER TO CENTER: .156''

MACS: 7

ROOT BOTTOM MASTER
DEPTH PINS PINS
----- ------ ------
# 0 .335 .165
# 1 .320 .180
# 2 .305 .195 .030
# 3 .290 .210
# 4 .275 .225 .060
# 5 .260 .240
# 6 .245 .255 .090
# 7 .230 .270
# 8 .215 .285 .120
# 9 .200 .300

Also, this is a dumb question, but these numbers mean there is only ten codes, right? ie, were I to make a master key, I would be using the same ten codes?

Thanks for the help.

Do you have the original master key?

No I don't. I want a relatively inexpensive machine that cut by code.

It's nice to see that people appreciate Matt's paper. But from what I've seen, code cutting and inexpensive don't mix. Maybe I'm wrong, I'm not a locksmith or keycutter after all, but all code cutting machine I've seen so far were pretty expenisve. Of course there are other ways...
It's not the tools that open the lock. It's me.

The cheapest way to go if you want a machine would be to purchase a set of depth keys and buy a small manual machine.

If you insist on purchasing a "code" machine, look for something like an HPC "punch" or a Curtis "code" machine...these are a few hundred dollars as compared to the more expensive machines that run $2000 and more.

Guess it depends on what you mean by inexpensive. ;)

re: 10 codes...actually you have a total of 14 codes...#0-9 plus 2,4,6,8 for your master pins.

Essentially, though, you stick with the codes listed there.

Thanks for the info!

How does the Ilco Exacta Key Code Cutters / Punches MK2-SCHLAGE look? It's at the bottom of the page here: http://www.lvsales.com/lvskmcod.htm

Thanks again.

Yup. Any of those will be more than enough for what you need. :)
