Need help cutting a Schlage key

Hi,

I am really new to this.

So, I have Schlage "E" key blanks. I've tried my hand at manually filing them, but that hasn't gone so well.

Can anyone recommend a relatively inexpensive key cutting machine that can work by code alone? Here are the Schlage codes I found over the internet:

SHOULDER TO FIRST CUT: .231''
CENTER TO CENTER: .156''

MACS: 7

ROOT BOTTOM MASTER

Also, this is a dumb question, but these numbers mean there is only ten codes, right? ie, were I to make a master key, I would be using the same ten codes?

It's nice to see that people appreciate Matt's paper. But from what I've seen, code cutting and inexpensive don't mix. Maybe I'm wrong, I'm not a locksmith or keycutter after all, but all code cutting machine I've seen so far were pretty expenisve. Of course there are other ways...

The cheapest way to go if you want a machine would be to purchase a set of depth keys and buy a small manual machine.

If you insist on purchasing a "code" machine, look for something like an HPC "punch" or a Curtis "code" machine...these are a few hundred dollars as compared to the more expensive machines that run $2000 and more.

Guess it depends on what you mean by inexpensive.
