8 mil with an attachment system on any tempered glass is the min (attachment isn't really needed on annealed glass, but recommended). 15 mil is really called for if you're trying to prevent someone from entering. 8 mil will hopefully deter them enough to give up.
But, just like locks, eventually they decide the frame or something else is easier to attack.
Professional installation is required. These products are not easy to apply properly.
As far as best, all the good brands are going to prefer similarly. Don't believe the hype about cross weaving or anything. Appropriate thickness is what matters. So LLumar, MADICO, 3M, Global, and HanitaTEK.
