Security film for glass--what's the best?

Postby Legion303 » 7 Mar 2012 19:12

If money were no object, what would people go with for security film/mesh/other methods of keeping glass intact? I know nothing about this arena at all, but I said I would ask around.

Is this from personal experience or are you relying on the testimony of someone who takes money to promote things? :P

there are lexan partitions on the local city buses near the doors, these have some kind of security film applied to them,
it gives a pebbleglass look and though it is stuck with some kind of very strong glue, the people who ride the buses are a tough crowd, and the film is peeled up at the edges, but its nearly impossible to tear.
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!

i've dealt with a few of the products 3M makes to add to glass to make it tamper/blast/vandal proof at various levels and they all seem to hold up as advertised. (i haven't tried to blow them up, but it's nearly impossible to scratch the ones that go for that, and have watched a sales guy take a baseball bat to a glass door and not be able to remove the glass from the frame where oen good swing all but emptied a matching door.)

<--- window tinter

8 mil with an attachment system on any tempered glass is the min (attachment isn't really needed on annealed glass, but recommended). 15 mil is really called for if you're trying to prevent someone from entering. 8 mil will hopefully deter them enough to give up.

But, just like locks, eventually they decide the frame or something else is easier to attack.

Professional installation is required. These products are not easy to apply properly.

As far as best, all the good brands are going to prefer similarly. Don't believe the hype about cross weaving or anything. Appropriate thickness is what matters. So LLumar, MADICO, 3M, Global, and HanitaTEK.

There are a few options out there. I sell one brand by an Atlanta based company that make a DIY kit. It is called ShatterGard and you can visit their site at http://shattergard.com/home.html

If you want to read the thread on my blog you are welcome.
