Floods in Houston, worried about safety box at my bank

Postby desidude » 19 Apr 2016 22:09

Hello friends,

I hope everyone is doing well. As many of you may have heard, there has been heavy rains, resulting in floods in the Houston area over the past 48 hours.

The parking lot across the street, which has some big box retailers, has flooded quite a lot.

Across the street is the bank where I have a safety deposit box, which is in a safe door which I was told is air tight and locks upon entry of water. Within the vault, inside the bank, the box is located about 6ft above the ground.

The bank has been closed since the last 2 days, so I am concerned about my belongings. I presume the water has not penetrated the bank, and definitely not risen 6ft high.

However, I was wondering how these safe doors work, and whether, I should be worried about my belongings...which are basically some family related documents.

Also, do you have recommendations for a good small sized water proof safe box?

Thank you so much,
desidude

Thing is safe boxes are generally not rated upon their waterproofedness (I made a new word!)
The Star safes, which are made by AMSEC (American Security) do come with an optional plastic lid with an o-ring
seal, that renders them waterproof, but even that only works as long as the seal is maintained. I think you will have
a better chance at finding a water-proof case looking at gear made by Pelican. They also make gear for the armed forces
and some of their most expensive gear includes a pump that will pressurize the container, and that will keep water out.
Unfortunately, they don't make a safe, but you can put their container into your safe...

I vacuum pack documents in food saver bags to protect them from water damage. Doesn't add much bulk and as an added bonus you can see through the plastic so it makes finding the right document easy.

I put lots of food in sandwich bags & even freezer bags before I freeze them and I notice they leak
all over my refrigerator when they are thawed out, they don't all seem very waterproof

I'm not swimming or deep sea diving with these items. If the water gets that high in my bank the water can have whatever it gets. I have the cheapest box, which is rather small. If I put a case in with it there is even less room. So I use sandwich bags and all of those go into a gallon freezer bag. Foolproof? not at all. It works for me and is better than nothing. Its also cheap and readily available which makes it a viable option in my opinion.
