Problem with a U-Lock

Postby flyingbovine » 13 May 2018 11:28

Hi Folks! I have a U-Lock that is currently attached to the top tube of a bicycle. The key was lost. From what I've gathered, it's a Bell Catalyst 200 lock. See video here:

I bought a cheap set of tubular picks and tried what he illustrated...it isn't working. In poking around on this thing, I noticed that one of the pins (the one that's 180 degrees opposite the drive tab) isn't sprung....it just floats up and down with gravity. I tried using the pick as illustrated with the lock barrel pointing downward, but no go. Does anyone know if this floating pin is normal? Is it a defect that's interfering with my ability to open the lock?

As a last resort have what I call my "Universal Lock Opener".....it's a Bosch ~4" Disk Grinder with a composite wheel. Has anyone gone after one of these locks with a 4" composite grinder? How long did it take to cut it (Note, I think I need to cut the shackle in two places) and is it a major hassle? Is it going to be less hassle to seek out somebody with a cutting torch?

Thanks!

I have always been told at work if that happens to drill and replace if it’s like that. I would imgagine it’s possible to open but would be tough to find the shear line for the loose one. Hence we drill it....

If you tip the lock so the key pin falls down, then it should still function.

Some tubular locks have just the top pin in that position. The bottom part of the lock is not drilled. Forget that pin for now. You'll pick it when it's over the next hole.

Or it may be a broken spring, in that case I second Gordon suggestion.

Good luck :)
