Schlage F knobs

Postby vector40 » 26 Jan 2006 22:28

Anyone know of a way to remove the knob (the keyed side) of a locking Schlage F knobset, WITHOUT turning the key 90 degrees? (It is unlocked and there is access to both sides.)

Long story involving a broken key.

You have messenger? If so add me and I'll explain how.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

Yikes! Have you tried disassembling it from the inside out? The problem with F locks is that you don't have the traditional tailpiece like the other Schlage series locks. Usually if you can disassemble one of those from the inside out then remove the tailpiece you can slide the pin that holds the lever/knob on the spindle then pop it right off. I'd like to see how this is done also. The company I worked for stocked tons of F locks so I could go and try one but my new company is pretty much commercial grade. No F locks on the shelf to break.

Inside out?

I can take off the inner knob, and I can take off the latchplate (at least in theory I can... it's being REALLY ornery for some reason). But I'm not sure how much that'll help...

Just to apprise everyone, it turns out that lock was a dirty liar; it was actually a D knobset (yes, an honest-to-god Grade 1). I ended up disassembling it from the back -- unscrewing the inner roset, pulling the outer assembly off, and taking it down to the point that I could rotate the cap of the cylinder with a screwdriver enough to press the retainer. Hijinks ensued when I had to reassemble the thing. Good times. Grade 1 locks are insane.
