One Columbus Day Weekend, three people broke into the school and stole $35,000 in laptops and graphing calculators....
Guess who was initially blamed?

They caught the guys eventually, 'cause one of the burglars got cold feet and turned himself in.

He's still not trusted, though. Whenever ANYTHING goes missing, he's the one to blame. Even though the theft happened last year. Stuff sticks with you, and people are always looking for someone to blame. Nothing gives a bereaved kid more pleasure than to point the finger at some kid and shout "That's the one!!!" It's the way the world works.
Even when you're careful and select the people who you show it to carefully, word gets around, especially when stuff gets stolen.
Guy 1:
Guy 2: I wonder who would do something like that?
Girl 1: I heard about some guy who could open locks and stuff. He's {insert name here}
Guy 1: It must be him! Let's get him!
People are like that. Be careful.
