S&G 8077 Combination improperly set

Postby dcorey » 27 Jul 2007 23:33

Hi,

This is my first post here. I work for the federal government and the $270(CAN) Sargant & Greenleaf 8077 lock was ordered for me to lock protected and confidential financial documents that I store and generate.

I followed the instructions for changing the combination and after redialing my combination, I turned the key hole screw to closed (which I gather means that I re-entered the combination 'correctly' or the same way I did when I set it). The problem is that I can't seem to re-enter the correct combination to open the lock, turn the screw in, and replace the back plate to use it.

I did dial the combination to the changing notch and not the vertical 'regular' one (this seems to be the obvious troubleshooting question).

So what I want to know is whether there's something I can do with back plate off to figure out what the combination is or whether I've got a nice paper weight that I'm going to need to replace from my own pocket.

Judging by what I've read about this lock on here, I'm probably SOL.

Well I havent had my hands on one of these but according to the PDF if you have the back open and the screw to the right position (or can turn it, bit confused on that one) you can recover the password.

Hope this helps. if not i bet i have more use for it than a paperweight :D

One hell of an expensive padlock of that type, i am supprised they didnt insist on somthing like a decent heavey padlock that uses keys,

I know the lock by the way incase anyone thought they would tell me its not the same as a cheap master combo lock :P

We really are treading a fine line with this thread due to the nature of the lock and the rules of site on safe locks, im orry to say but i cant and dont trust the members here anymore not to post up info that shouldnt be posted in the open sections so can i please refer you to the PM system with the start being jacknco and then anyone else who can help to contact you,

Sorry but thread locked as i cant be here to babysit the others all the time,

If you continue to have problems the two options avbailalbe to you are to call a locksmith or call S&G,

Ps, if someone i respect wants to pm me that this isnt a decent lock very simular to a safe lock then i will consider unlocking the thread again but at the point i consider this to be a lock not open for discussion in here,
