I haven't found cutaway or transparent locks to be all that helpful in learning how to actually pick a lock. All of the action seems to happen at a level that is really hard to see with the naked eye (for me anyway) and from a beginner standpoint when you don't really have a clear picture whats going on anyway it makes them rather pointless. I think its easier to get a cheap kwikset (most of which seem to have very wide pins which give good feedback) and just play around with varying numbers of pins. As far as learning how a lock works when functioning normally, with a key I think they're great.
