We found a Medeco key in the safe at work today.
It is unmarked, no stampings, but the bitting appears to be a 3 pin biaxial.
The interesting part is the bow of the key is not a normal medeco square or circle. it looks like the key inserted into the M3 on Tobias's Insecurity page
take a look: http://security.org
It reminds me of the keys you get with a Ford van, where the spare/valet key has a much smaller bow on it, like a neutered bow.
Any idea what this little key might go to? we tried all the medeco cam locks in house and this key has different warding than our system.
maybe a Fireking cabinet? we do have those, but they're square and have Fireking stampings.
(I cannot post a pic, since it is a key in use. )
thanks for any tips.

Ive never seen a 3 pin M3, but I have seen some older three pin medeco keys that were pin twisting, these were keys to computer on off switches.
Of course, a 3 pin medeco is a good design downgraded for insecurity.

Sorry, I know Tobias' pic is an M3, my key is non-M3, but the bow looks like that small rectangle with a curved edge.
thanks for that tip, it may belong to equipment no longer here.

sure. I think both ILCO and US LOCK have generic keys.. the 5 pin original patent expired, so they have the MED5 and MED6 round head blanks.
you'll still need a Medeco or proper HPC cutter to make a key.
I'm hoping someone can ID this key =)

It's a medeco factory key, most likely for a file cabinet, althout it could be from a desk or other piece of furniture.
They come on a key ring with a little aluminum tag that has a blind key code and an address from where you can order replacements, right from the factory.
I know we were just talking about this in IRC Squelchtone, I hope you believe me now that I have a pic. The one shown below even has the same keyway as your key, so it's an off-the-shelf item, not a restricted keyway.

Sorry, I couldn't resist that little jab Squelchtone. When I told you in IRC that I had a key just like that and you said something like "No FREAKIN way man!", I just had to rub it in a little bit.
A bit of a coincidence though, I have to admit. I had completely forgotten about those old keys I had laying around, but after I saw the pic you posted something looked familiar so I started digging around and got lucky.

I actually have a couple of those myself, mine came from a case lock on an old PC tower. i kept them because i had never seen one like it before. but i have ran into a few more since then. it may also go to some file cabinet or storage device but the ones i had were for a PC Case Lock.

A 3 pin medeco key from an RS/6000 computer case (New stock, never used):
And a 4 pin medeco payphone key (no longer in service), it appears to have been made to resemble the old Western Electric lock keys:
