Practice lock mounting

Postby k1500 » 1 Nov 2013 22:36

I just bought a supermax seven pin practice lock.
It shipped in a timely fashion and arrived as described. I haven't had much time to use it, but I believe it wil provide quite a challenge for some time.

I'm not quite sure how to mount it though. I have a couple of vises, but would prefer something better. Any ideas?

If you don't want to use a vise and still want to practice picking on a mortise cylinder I have found something that works well for me. It is a little key box that you can screw mortise cylinders into. Here is a link to one on Amazon:

I have one and use it to practice picking sometimes when I want to sit somewhere and just hold the the thing in my hand or set it on a table. It works well and can have any standard mortise cylinder screw into it.

cut a hole in a box.
put your... lock in the hole.
let her open the box!

sorry couldn't resist :)

what I really mean is just make a hole in a piece of plywood to mount the lock. look for training station here on the forum and you'll see what many people did.

cheers :)

The supra looks ok but a bit small.

Is there a name for the nut that goes on the back of the cylinder? I'm sure I could buy one from a local locksmith.
It appears that is how this cylinder mounts. Similar to the below, by squelchtone.

Here is a place to get some of those cylinder nuts or rings. I have heard them called other things, so maybe a real locksmith can chime in on the "official" name?

Also, I wanted to mention that I suggested that Supra because it is small and you can hold it in one hand and work on the cylinder that way. I originally didn't buy the Supra for that reason but ended up using it that way on occasion. And Squelchtone's practice board is really cool, would love to make something like that sometime...

May I suggest one method of building a mortise lock holder.
Use a flat board of whatever size is most convienent to you. Drill a 1 1/8 inch hole in the board where the mortise cylinder will be. Saw a slot down straight through the center of the drilled hole and a short way below it. At the top of the board drill a hole through the side all the way through. Insert a carridge bolt through the hole so it comes out the other side by about 1/4 inch. Put on a washer and a wing nut.
When the mortise cylinder is inserted in the 1 1/8 hole, tighten the wingnut to close the slot in the board. This compression will hold the mortise cylinder firmly. The cylinders can be switched out very simply and quickly by just loosening the wingnut.
There are many variations for this clamp type holder. Use your imagination.
Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool. Wisdom is not just in determining how to do something, but also includes determining whether it should be done at all.
