Privacy lock?

Postby Bl1ndE Esk1mo » 24 Mar 2016 21:34

My father made a mock door for me to practice picking. It is an unnamed privacy lock, in which the side without the keyhole is pressed in and turned to set the lock. There is no unlocking pinhole for a quick unlock. As for the keyhole itself it is relatively open and feels like it has 5 pins. However when I attempt to pick it I get no feedback and cannot feel anything like a shear line. I have tried raking and spping but neither were successful. I also have no key to check the bitting. My questions are: when it is picked will the other side "pop" or will the knob just open/turn and is there anything special I should be doing to pick this type of lock to get feedback.

you know how they say a picture is worth a thousand words? we could tell you a lot more about your lock if we saw the keyhole and the latch on the side and the knobs on both sides so we know what brand and model you have.

upload pics to http://imgur.com/ and then Copy/Paste here.

The lock you describe is an Entry function not Privacy.

If the whole inside knob pushes in & turns, to lock then it sounds like an older weiser entry handleset

Yes, that sounds most likely. So the knob will pop out when picked.

This is a Weiser old style (pre dates smart key) entry knob lock.
Most likely the reason why you are having trouble is the area around the cylinder is made out of plastic.
These are normally fairly easy to pick, as the cylinder itself comes pre-filed flat from the factory.
Give it a spritz of wd-40 and pick it open
