Question about Lever locks in S. Europe vs L. Locks in UK

Postby Theban » 20 Apr 2018 7:08

Here in Greece and as far as I know also in Italy and other countries in Southern Europe, the double bitted lock had been the "high security " lock for years.
For some years now they are considered obsolete and very easy to pick by people with the correct tool. People change these locks in security doors all over the country, there is a whole business for this. No new security doors are installed with this kind of locks anymore.

On the other hand, as I read about locks and door security and stuff, I come across various sites from UK where the 5-lever lock is highly recommended!

I am new on this subject but as far as I can understand these two kind of locks are very similar. I can not understand why these locks are still so popular in the UK.
Is there a fundamental difference between those two kinds of locks that I can not see? Or it's just a matter of time before the same picking tools make the headlines in UK? Or maybe I am missing something altogether?

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Double bitted lever locks (doppia mappa in Italy) and curtained lever locks are completely different beasts. Among both of these groups, some cheap lever locks are very easy to pick and should be replaced asap. Other lever locks are very well made and can be considered as secure as a high security euro profile lock.

Cheers :)

Thank you so much for your answer!

I still wonder why nobody tried to introduce these locks in our markets as replacements for double bitted key locks, since it would had been a very easy replacement (compared to cylinder locks).
