@demux:

It would take quite a lot of CK balls to fill those holes.

It is just not a good idea to use a #1 master pin in many or most systems. There are exceptions, but not a lot.

I have filled holes in the plug with epoxy and sanded it smooth. I did it to make a challenge lock but it worked fine. Not pulling your leg.

If putting the lock into use for a resale usage, then I would not modify it. If for a challenge lock, I would have no problem using JB Weld and sand it smooth after it dried, too.

My response was more a joke when the member said "please don't do that".

But as I stated a couple posts ago, just don't use a single step master pin, and your problem is solved.

The pins I have are specifically for Kwikset locks. The bottom pins are chamfered on both ends. The problem is happening with #2 master pins (master 32222, change 32424.)

I thought about putting CK balls in the holes, but the balls seem to be pretty small, and I thought that since wear seems to be part of the problem, they might also cause binding.

What I ended up doing was degreasing the plug, filing the CK holes with JB-Weld, and sanding it down. Seems to work. I was amazed at how soft the material is that the plug is made out of.

It was a learning experience, but I wouldn't want to do it a lot. Part of what I learned is how junky Kwikset locks are. However, the lock will be going back into use on an apartment. If there is a problem, I will deal with it, but I think it will be okay.

Once again, my thanks to everyone who gave me the benefit of their expertise.

If you think Kwikset locks seem junky you should see a new Schlage pot metal cylinder

I know J&B Weld can work wonders,
Cause I read the little story on the package one time
