The pins I have are specifically for Kwikset locks. The bottom pins are chamfered on both ends. The problem is happening with #2 master pins (master 32222, change 32424.)
I thought about putting CK balls in the holes, but the balls seem to be pretty small, and I thought that since wear seems to be part of the problem, they might also cause binding.
What I ended up doing was degreasing the plug, filing the CK holes with JB-Weld, and sanding it down. Seems to work. I was amazed at how soft the material is that the plug is made out of.
It was a learning experience, but I wouldn't want to do it a lot. Part of what I learned is how junky Kwikset locks are. However, the lock will be going back into use on an apartment. If there is a problem, I will deal with it, but I think it will be okay.
Once again, my thanks to everyone who gave me the benefit of their expertise.
