Disassembly guide

Postby Fogmeister » 25 Apr 2006 11:13

Hi guys,

I just wanted to know if it's possible to disassemble a lock I have and repin it?

This is the lock...

It's a 5 pin lock and I have the key for it. I wanted it to practise on it and I wondered if the only way to repin this is to "Dremel" the "caps" that hold the pins in?

I would like to be able practise with fewer pins.

Thanks for putting up with another stupid question.

LOL, I was just coming to delete the thread!

Why do I always find things 2 minutes after posting a question when couldn't find them before!

It's no big issue. You found what you were after one way, or another. :)

Thats a snap to secure cylinder as well so you may be better off doing the side without the slot cut in it

I wondered what that slot was for. BTW, what's a "snap to secure" cylinder?

Next question, when you said "doing" the side without the slot, did you mean picking or repinning? I think I'd prefer to only repin one side so if I mess up I still have a lock I can practise on.

Thanks again.

Just Googled it. Does this affect how the lock was put together on the inside?

I meant repin the side that doesnt have the slot in it, i only say as there is a small possability that the pins may get stuck on the slot if you dont do it the right way but its not common.

Snap to secure is there so if the lock is broken by a destructive opening technique or now unfortunatly a burgulary technique then you will still be left with half the lock in the door and it will still be locked, its very very easy to get around it, i thought up a way to do it so im sure others have so its still not secure in my eyes but it helps.

It shouldnt affect picking of the lock.

The lock you have seems to have more material left after the cut than i thought they had so perhaps its an early one.

You got the link to the guides. On a side note, if this lock is just for training and you don't mind butchering it and you are not interested in the coupling/cam mechanism you can simplify the repinning by just cutting the lock in half right where the cam/screwhole is. This way you get two halves and it is easier to repin the lock with proper access from the rear. You don't have to fiddle around with mounting clamps that way, you can just use a plug follower to push out the plug and vice versa for reassembly.

Certainly easier if you are new to pinning. At least it worked for me :). I only have halflocks without cam for training...
Due to financial limitations the light at the end of tunnel has been turned off until further notice.
