Need help/advice with messed up lock

Postby spowers » 15 Jan 2011 10:05

So, I got an American lock 5200, and out of curiosity I took it apart. One mistake that I realized a bit too late, is when I brought the cylinder to 180 degrees where the key pins could be seen, a couple of them fell out. I did not notice this when reassembling the lock, and a couple of the driver pins subsequently fell out. I noticed this well after reassembling the lock, and the springs themselves got caught on the keyway, and mangled. I figure only thing to do at this point would be to get new springs, and completely disassemble the mechanism, replace the messed up springs, and try not to do that again. :(

The two problems I have are one that the plug seems not to be held in by a C clip, but instead some of the metal is bent in to hold it in place. Second, what size springs would be required and where could I obtain them? Any advice on how to proceed would be appreciated. Thanks.

you've got one of the new 5200s i'm betting they realy suck for taking apart if you roate the plug 90 in either direction putting the bottom of the keyway fulsh with the cripm on the opposite side take a flat head screw driver and pry the crimp slightly putting downward pressure on the plug it should slide out. If it that then there is no security pins at all jut a bump stop pin THis is one of them that i gutted and the pins:

The springs you can either buy from some place like MR lock 100 for 2.13 USD for 100:

Or take apart a cheap master you don't need or a broken lock similar and use those springs.

Thank you. I figured that is what I would end up needing to do. And thanks for the advice on the place to get the parts. I came across them while searching, but was unsure if they were a reputable dealer; sometimes it is hard to tell online.

Thanks, I will get a service kit so that I have some extra pins and stuff, and see if I can fix my mistake.

Hey WolfSpring

What are those pins in the new 5200? Are they still serrated? Is that last silver pin a serrated spool?

Thanks,
Ed

They are normal Master Lock Company pins, no serate or spool, the siler one is a bump stop pin, funny thing is I couldn't pick this to save my life but I was able to snap pick it lol, lot of good that pin does, after I took it apart and realized I wasn't picking an old school real 5200 I was able to put a whole lot less tension on it and pick it really easy, even rake it. As far as parts Mrlock.com has all sorts of parts for those locks, just click padlocks, american and it will show you all the parts, even has repinning kits, shackles, and all the parts to refurb any amercian pad lock.
