My Latest Acquisition

Postby sandplum » 26 Oct 2012 3:17

I dropped by my local ReStore (Habit for Humanity) and had some fun
buying a lock for my collection. For those of you not familiar with
ReStore, they sell used and discarded construction materials. They
usually have some bins of used door knobs and deadbolts, and I like to
dig through them looking for parts.

But today I found myself attracted to one of the doors on display in
the back. You see, it still had a deadbolt attached to it, which is
unusual since they usually remove all of the hardware. On closer
inspection, it turned out to be a very clean and shiny Mul-T-Lock double
deadbolt! Probably left there because the mounting screws are
concealed.

I asked if the door came with the lock, and the clerk told me yes, it
was being sold together so that they wouldn't have to remove the lock,
and buying the pieces separately was not an option. Okay, fine... I
bought the whole door! But when the clerk started to move the door, I
told her to leave it there because I was only taking the lock. She
looked surprised and confused.

I got my tools from my car and the clerk asked me how I was going to
get the lock off the door, since "there are no screws"! She had
explained the situation to her boss, who warned her that I would be
unhappy when I couldn't remove the lock. Now she was worried. I just
grinned and told her that you have to know how.

Using an ice pick, I slowly and carefully pried the coverplate from
the inside cylinder, revealing the two hex bolts. I unscrewed those
and the two cylinders came off the door. Slid the bolt out of the side
and I now I had my complete lock.

Now I just need to make a key....

Nice score sandplum! Were the employees in awe when you took the lock off the door like it wasn't a big deal at all? =)

My local Restore (which was not affliated with the real Restores), had to change names and is now some sanitized version where it looks like a retail store versus an old warehouse which was much more fun to pick through. The new store is called EcoBuilding Bargains http://www.ecobuildingbargains.org/ and I'm lucky to find a Kwikset knobset with keys on a good day.

Here's an old thread from 2008 when I first visited the store at their old warehouse location, after my initial haul there, the selection of cool locks dwindled down pretty quickly. viewtopic.php?f=9&t=38658&view=next

congrats on your awesome find,

Sandplum,

Went to the HabiStore (our branded Habitat For Humanity store) here in Tucson. I'll post a pic tomorrow of my find. For $1, tossed in with the privacy knobs was what they were calling a "weird privacy deadbolt that did not work".

Definitely worn and scratched, but I had never heard that Abloy makes privacy deadbolts. They did not realize that that tiny figure eight opening was for a different type of key. Unfortunately I do not have the tools to attempt to pick this, but that will come in time.

Not as great conditioned a find as your MTL (jealous of THAT find!), but not bad for a buck.

I love stories like this, salvaging old locks and giving them good homes instead of sending them to the landfill.

Nice find on the Mul-T-Locks. Congratulations.

Gordon, you found an Abloy disc detainer in Arizona?! How cool! You know, I have a tool that opens some of those... we should get together and try it out.

It floored me, too. Just about a week ago I got my first disc detainer locks, an Abloy (a classic vending lock) and a couple other disc detainer locks on a trade with Zeepia. (Thanks again!)

Now I have 2 Abloys. Always wanted one. The only disc detainer locks I've seen for sale are some cheap bicycle locks at Walmart. At 3 discs to a lock - with a flashlight, could count them - for $30, they stayed on the shelf at Walmart.
