buying a lock for my collection. For those of you not familiar with
ReStore, they sell used and discarded construction materials. They
usually have some bins of used door knobs and deadbolts, and I like to
dig through them looking for parts.
But today I found myself attracted to one of the doors on display in
the back. You see, it still had a deadbolt attached to it, which is
unusual since they usually remove all of the hardware. On closer
inspection, it turned out to be a very clean and shiny Mul-T-Lock double
deadbolt! Probably left there because the mounting screws are
concealed.
I asked if the door came with the lock, and the clerk told me yes, it
was being sold together so that they wouldn't have to remove the lock,
and buying the pieces separately was not an option. Okay, fine... I
bought the whole door! But when the clerk started to move the door, I
told her to leave it there because I was only taking the lock. She
looked surprised and confused.
I got my tools from my car and the clerk asked me how I was going to
get the lock off the door, since "there are no screws"! She had
explained the situation to her boss, who warned her that I would be
unhappy when I couldn't remove the lock. Now she was worried. I just
grinned and told her that you have to know how.
Using an ice pick, I slowly and carefully pried the coverplate from
the inside cylinder, revealing the two hex bolts. I unscrewed those
and the two cylinders came off the door. Slid the bolt out of the side
and I now I had my complete lock.
Now I just need to make a key....
