Removing tailpiece from Schlage deadbolt

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Removing tailpiece from Schlage deadbolt

Postby sportsbettor1985 » 2 May 2013 1:15

Greetings all,

I have a Schlage deadbolt of which model I am not sure of. The cap that is covering the tailpiece does not have the spring loaded pin that you push in while you twist the cap off. Instead the cap has two circular marks (one on top and the other on the bottom) where it looks like some machine put the cap on. I was wondering how I could remove the cap in order to rekey the lock.

Thanks!

I doubt that is a Schlage product. It may use a schlage key but I don't think it was manufactured by schlage.
It would appear that a c-clip should be attached between the cap and the body to retain the cylinder, that has been removed or is missing.

Assuming you have:
Correct key, or can pick the lock
Standard shim and a follower or a follower that fits correctly
Small vise
Small hammer

Use the key or pick so the cylinder is at 3:00 ( exact position is not critical as long as the lock is open)
Put the complete lock + key into the vise, tail piece up ,key end down.

LIGHTLY tap the tail piece down to remove the cap, once it gets started the cap should be easily removed by hand.

Hope this helps

Correct, that isn't a Schlage. Made in Taiwan special.

Use a small flat screwdriver to lift that cap off then remove the c-clip to remove the plug for rekeying. Reverse to assemble.

If you remove the "C" clip you should be able to leave
the cap and tail-piece intact, pick/shim or use a key
then follow the plug out the rear.
Just use a hollow follow through!

Thanks guys for your help. The lock is stamped Schlage and I found the lock packaging and it said it was a Dexter by Schlage JD60/JD62 series deadbolt on the installation notes.

Yes, you are correct. These were labeled Schlage, I have also seen them labeled Dexter but with a Schlage keyway. Neither company makes this though, they are a cheap import. I had a condo a couple of weeks ago with 3 of these I had to pick. They pick in a couple of seconds. If I recall the face of the plug is recessed in line with the keyway. The ones I had I believe had a slightly different tailpiece arrangement.

Another one of these I had actually turned with a bump key. I mean it worked without having to pump it. The lock had all deep cuts and the tolerances are so loose that you can be a fair bit off and the lock will still operate.

Today I had to rekey this exact same lock, this time KW1 keyway and Defiant brand. I believe that is Home Depot's house brand.
