That is an index bearing. It gives a definite feel when the key is in the correct location for removal.

Any idea why I couldn't pick the lock?

Idea one: Practice.

Idea two: Practice.

Idea three: Practice.

This is not to be sarcastic. All of us need more practice. My skills have been slipping a fair bit due to increased use of impact tools at work and, most especially, lack of practice. Find myself applying too much tension for too many locks. What do I need most to get my skills back? Practice.

The index bearing may be having an effect on feel - you will need to overcome the resistance of the bearing and related spring when tensioning, but not over-tension the plug.

I practice every day. I feel like it had to be something to do with the bearing due to the rest of the innards. They were just regular pins, the kind of lock I pick in 20 seconds, not 20 hours.

In the end I suppose it was just strange. I suppose I'll figure it out eventually.

Some days the lock wins one !! Just like when the stars all align for you and you zip that high security lock in about two passes down the stack, they can align against you !!

If I had to make a guess, I'd say you might have been over-setting that shallow pin ....

I'd put the lock back together with the original pinning and leave the bearing out. See if that changes the "feel" of the pick.

Everybody who picks long enough will run across a lock that they can't open ... At least at that time .... As their skills improve and they gain more experience, they'll go back and open that same lock ....

I always enjoy an experience like you had .... If we didn't want a challenge, we wouldn't be doin' this in the first place ... :D

Remember, you ain't beat 'till you quit !!
