ABUS 85/40 Cutaway Padlock

Postby ThE_MasteR » 21 Sep 2005 17:54

Hey peeps,

I am glad to say this, very glad actually.

Today I had nothing to do, and I saw a topic about a 65/40 cutaway, the Chrispy did, and I decided to try it out on one of the two 85/40s that I had.

I was very suprised when I saw this:

1st Pin: Spool Pin
2nd Pin: Spool Pin
3rd Pin: Spool Pin
4th Pin: Spool Pin
5th Pin: Spool Pin

I impressed my own self when I saw this..I had never picked a lock with spools in it, and this is 5 pins we are talking about here lol.

Anyways, I just wanted to let you guys know haha..!

Manufactureres are not supposed to put spools on certain stacks like the first. They cause problems with keys entering, I read this somewhere, but I forgot the details. Shame on you, Abus.

I couldn't tell you if the key entered well or not, because I found this lock in the grass :D

I had an old LSDA padlock given to me that was my nemesis for quite some time. When I finally conquered it, I ground the sucker down do see what was going on and discovered that it did in fact have 5 spools on top. I know I've read in LSS that you can't (shouldn't?) have all spool pins because there is a risk that the plug will turn a bit and not allow entry of the key, but this lock had it. It was not the type that could be rekeyed (thus the grinder treatment) so I'm certain this was factory original.

Slight thread resurrection here, but I think this may be interesting. I received an Abus 85/50 cutaway today, and sure enough it has spools in all 5 positions. So I checked to see if the plug turns slightly without the key in. Sure enough it does, if you just put the tip of the key in and turn. To prove the point, if you then try to push the key in while keeping it turned it won't go in.

So why isn't this a problem? It's because the spring on the bolts is strong enough to hold the plug in the unturned position unless you go out of your way to turn it as you insert it, which is a very unnatural thing to do.

Oh well, I learned something.

That makes sense. Never really thought of it, but you're absolutely right. If the plug is spring biased (as is often the case in padlocks) the problem with 5 spools would be moot.

You're not the only one who learned something new. :)
