Yale latch jammed

On rare occasions the snib can be operated and the door slammed which creates the lockout we have hear, the latch cant be pushed back, the key wont open the lock and the handle on the back doesnt work.

It depend on whos been round and fitted the lock before you, i find it hard on any ive fitted but then i do leave as smaller gap as possible i take it its easier to do the farer away the keep is to the lock?

the first one of these (and lets face it you never forget your first ) i came accross was on a old victorian hotel and i managed to open it with the air wedge, as the door was a poor fitt and the hindges gave alittle. it was a experince to say the least, it was after i heard about drilling them but i aways try the air wedge first anyway

Most that I've come across where the door has slammed shut with the snib on, the keep has been loose so the solid latch has pushed the keep away allowing it to force itself past and into it.

Thanks for all the advice I received. I didn't have any more luck slipping the lock so the landlord's maintenence guy came out kicked the door. The goal was the break the lock, but the frame broke first (not a great surprise). He then patched up the frame so the problem is sorted. The frame probably isn't as strong as before, but I don't think this makes a great deal of difference as the lock is trivially slippable, and it wasn't that strong a frame anyway.

Get your self a london bar and place a screw just in front of where the mica would hit the latch. If you leave it slightly raised but not so much the door scrapes you should deter the slipping problem.The mica will catch under the screw head and fustrate the hell out of the person trying to slip it.
