As thin as you want. But a "safe" made out of 20ga sheet metal isnt going to protect anything.

By the time the hole is filled, the safe will be caved in.

I'd say 1/4 of an inch thick is good if you want absoluted authenticity, but 1/8 or 1/16 of an inch is fine (sorry, forgot what guage that is). What I'd do if I were making a "vault" type door is find a 3-point mortise lockset and sandwich it inbetween an 1/8 inch thick steel plates.

(A LITTLE OFF TOPIC) i know that i want to make a Safe but i don't know how to bring this to my teacher, that is if i were to tell him that i do lockpicking as a hobby and he send me straight to the headmaster and i may get thrown out of college OR if someone also knows how to unlock a door and i will most likely get the blame(knowing my luck) SO how exactly should i tell him??

P.S Please don't think that all of your advice has gone down the pan i'm
95% sure that he'll let me make it so please keep on posting and even if i can't make it in college i can for sure make at my lockpicking teachers house[/u]
