Deadbolts are locked in that way, and so are most modern knob latches, using an extra piece (the small, D-shaped piece on one side of the latch) that is pressed in when the door's closed and prevents the latch from moving without the knob turning.

It's true that not all knobs are deadlatched, and some deadlatches just don't work due to shoddy installation (the door and frame are far enough apart that it isn't depressed enough, or the deadlatch is falling into the strike) or malfunctioning design.

Deadbolt bolts when fully extended cannot be slipped. 8)

Funny I never thought someone would ask about slipping the lock, and seriously not knowing about it. My whole life from the furthest back I can remember my parents locked themselves out of the house, and then slipped the lock to get back in. I also grew up with them using hangers on the inside of our car doors when they locked themselves out of their cars. Perhaps my fascination with locks comes from watching my parents lock themselves out of things my whole life growing up.

No body ever showed me this, and I was very proud of myself when I was younger (12 I think) figuring it out on my own (used a clothes hanger to slip the latch to a door to a part of a building to explore with a couple of my friends while the 'grown ups' had a wedding party or something in the other part of the building).
