Need Help With This Master Lock

So I'm completely new to lock picking, I've read through the MIT guide but got about nothing out of it. The lock I'm trying to pick a v3d Master combo lock with a keyhole in it. My question is how do I put in the tension tool? And which pick should I use? My resources is this set:

It would also be nice to get each pick explained to me, what they do, etc. Also what should I do once I put the pick inside? Thanks in advance I know this is asking alot but I really want to learn. Thanks.[/img]

The tension wrench is for applying a turning force to the plug.
The plug is the keyhole, since you got nothing from the MIT.

The pins need to be pushed up to the shearline,
being held above it by the misalignment of the holes
in the plug and pin chambers.
(Creates a ledge).

The tension wrench goes into the keyway.
Since you haven't bothered to fill ou the location for your profile, this could be the top or the bottom.
(Put it in the opposite side to where the pins are).

The hook is what you should use for single pin picking. That is the one that you should learn with,
in my opinion.

There is a thread somewhere here that describes their
uses waaay better than I would, so I'll leave that to you to search for.

(Hint: search for 'pick uses' or 'pick names' funnily enough).

wow I feel like a jerk off, anyways I'm from the United States. And should I be able to pick this lock? Since I have no idea how many pins are in it.

Use the flat side of a half diamond pick and push all
the pins together.
Slowly pull the pick out, counting the clicks that you hear.
This will tell you how many pins are in it.
There is a piece of lock that sticks down as well, don't
confuse the pick coming off that as a click.

If you have the key, you can look at the cuts in it to
tell, but being a beginner, I'd suggest to use the key
as a guide to see how far in to put the upside down pick.

Otherwise, stick it all the way into the lock and push it against the pins.
Pull it out, and you will feel it drop against the pins. That is the 'obstacle' at the back of the lock that
I'm talking about.


I don't know the specifics of the lock you are talking
about, but I do know of it.

If you can get an understanding of how a lock works
and why the plug doesn't turn without the key, a
little practice, you should be fine.

Play with the pick and lock in the dark when you go to bed.
don't try to pick it, just feel aroud in it.

Seriously, you need to read the guide (a few times) and not just skim it. OK, some of the terminology is incorrect, but the actual theory has enlightened a huge amount of new pickers.

lol.. you probably skimmed through it... when I first started.. (although I didn't read the MIT untl way later) I had a small booklet that came with my first set (I think its from south ord) and its pretty much the same as the MIT guide except not as extensive. I must say that the MIT has a good amount of info for beginners to learn how a lock works and why it can be picked. Unless you know the basics about picking I suggest you re read the guide. If you don't get your basics down, prepare to break alot of locks. And if you really wanna get a feel for pick locking
I suggest you buy a cheap lock, remove the plug (you need to do this slowly or all the pins and springs will go flying everywhere.) Then start of with 2 pins... once you can pick that, go to 3 pins, etc. until you can pick all five. I really suggest this method because although some locks are really easy to pick (and often times you might get lucky) some can be realllllly fustrating.. so starting off with 2 pins should help you get the 'feel' of lock picking....
