My parents were not too happy when I started. Not until the day they locked the keys to the tool shed in the shed.... Then it was okay. Once you get a nice Kwikset to pick, teach your father. Most people find their first pick to be amazing, so he might see things in a new light.

You know me too well.
Okay, vector, I won't guarantee anything, but the Peterson set is a nice set. (compared to southord, oh wait, they own everyone ) He should be pleased with the PSX as a starter set.

Congratulations! The easy bit is now over and done with.
If you haven't done so already, check out the MIT guide, Matt Blaze's site ( www.crypto.com/papers/notes/picking/), all the FAQ's on here, and anything else you can get your hands on. Then set aside some quality time for learning.
If it ain't broke.....pull it down and see how it works anyway!

my recomendation:
make your own!
its not to hard but not the most evective picks
for a tension bar get one of those wire rakes and pull of a wire and bend it so you got a half inch on one side of the bend and 3 or 4 inch on the other side
for the rake well you could just use anothe rake wire or well i dont know i use a fricking needle gain an amagination and think of things you can use

That sounded a little harsh... perhaps I read it wrong.

So i did make the right choice taking the PSX-17! Yay! How long does it usually take to ship? It says about 2 days, but I've learned not to really trust these timings....

A toast to the victory of reason. While you wait on your picks you can look around for locks. I'd stay away from the front door while you parents are still not totally sure about this. Padlocks are easy to come by and make a good option. Even some of the cheap ones (i.e. Master lock 140) have security pins, once you're ready for them. If you're thinking of picking up a deadbolt from the hardware store I'd take a look at Varjeal's kits first: http://www.varjeal.com/
Much, much more versatile with a security pin kit.

i have pleanty of padlocks. Right here, I have a Masterlock. It says on the bottom No. 1. Is that the type? If so, I have two No. 1's, and a No. 7 padlock.

Well WhiteDragon, I'm really glad to hear that your parents came around. If you ordered your picks from lockpickshop.com, you should receive them pretty quick. I don't think they indicate that you'll get them in 2 days. It's more than likely that they mention that they'll ship within 2 days of receipt of payment, but my experiences have been that they ship them out the same day. If you are getting them via regular USPS it'll probably be 4-7 days.
And, in answer to your question, yes, the No. 1 and No. 7 are the model numbers. In addition to picking those padlocks, I would urge you to consider purchasing a deadbolt or KIK (key-in-knob) cylinder to work on. Varjeal's kit is a great value, or if funds are tight right now (after just purchasing your pick set) you might consider a cheap Kwikset deadbolt set. Make sure to buy the one that's keyed on both sides. This way you get two cylinders for a very good price.
Good luck, and happy picking!
