I finally have the time to learn...

Hi everyone. Im new to the site. I must say that I have been fascinated with the subject of lock picking for a long time but have never had time to dedicate to learning.
To put it simply, ive always wanted to be a jack of all trades. In highschool I became proficient enough at bypassing computer security (just for fun, not to cause damage. i swear.. :D ) that I was offered a job at a major university to help administer and update their network. Ive always had interest in understanding how things work. I enjoy the challenge of taking apart and diagnosing problems with vehicles, electronics and almost anything else I come across. I like to solve problems.

In a sense, what first attracted me to lock picking was my unfortunate habit of locking myself out of cars and dorm rooms. It is interesting to know that behind a thin door could be my most valuable possessions, yet if I lack a little piece of metal, Ive essentially locked myself away from what is rightfully mine. So, naturally, I seek to become self-sufficient enough to never feel locked out of my own car, house, apartment, lockbox, etc.

I have the willingness and motivation to learn, I just need to know where to get started. I have read the MIT guide as well as almost anything else I could find online on the subject, but I have not aquired any practice locks or lock pick sets. I would like to get a set that will allow me to learn but also be able to open basic doors and locks. Is this something a beginner set will allow me to do? If so, what is the current best deal on a decent set? I cannot make my own set as of yet...

My name is Dave and Im from New York, although Im currently in PA.

Thanks everyone!

Have a look at lockpickshop.com.
Should be a flashing ad for them on the left

Anything they got will be good for learning with.

Lockpicking takes skill and practice and if the only reason
you want to learn is so that you don't need to remember
your keys, I'd say not to bother.

....Sort of like learning Chinese so that you can order takeaway.

Besides, you'll still have to remember your picks, hehe.

Anyway, have fun it is a great hobby.

well forgetting my keys is only what got my interest sparked, but I really want to learn for the challenge that it presents as well as for the fun of it.

Ive seen advertisements for the "pick pen", as pictured on the top left of this site, for quite a while. Is this a good alternative pick and will a beginner be able to use it? Im ok with a steep learning curve, I want something that is both convenient and functional.

Other question. ive heard some others talking about a forum discount for picks. Is this true and how do I check this out?

Sorry for all the newbie questions but I figured Id get it all out of the way now 8)
