Can I legally buy picks?

Postby l0cked0ut » 10 Oct 2005 10:36

Im in the US and was about to place an order for a lock pick set when I read the following legal disclaimer by the website (lockpicks.com):

"buyer certifies that he/she/it is one or more of the following: a bona fide locksmith; lock distributor; bona fide repossessor; motor vehicle dealer; lock manufacturer; or a motor vehicle manufacturer;, law enforcement officer; a bona fide fire fighter; a bona fide purchaser for one of the aforementioned; and/or a customer who will have this purchase shipped outside the United States, its possession, or territories; and/or a customer who is purchasing items that are not "locksmith entry tools."

LockPicks.com or its parent will not deliver any locksmithing device through the mail to a person who cannot certify that he/she/it falls into one of the aforementioned categories

So, I guess that means that I cant get picks if Im a beginner in the US? Are there other sites that dont have this policy?

A lot of non-locksmiths seem to be able to get stuff from lockpickshop.com
I am lead to believe that they also accept money orders, so you don't need
a credit card.

They can definitely be bought.
Never had to deal with them myself.

Yes, lockpickshop.com will likely be able to help you out. Send them and email. You'll find the owner very helpful.

In most states it is not illegal to own picks. I have actually found that many self defense/martial arts stores sell picks. I bought my first set at such a store. It was nice to be able to see them in real life before making a purchase. :D There are also many sites on the internet that will sell to anyone.

Legal Terms of Sale YOU MUST BE AT LEAST 18 YEARS OF AGE TO ORDER! It is the sole responsibility of the BUYER (not LockPicks.com and/or its employees; nore the employees, officers, board members, or stock holders of its parent) to ascertain and obey all applicable Federal, State, and Local Laws regarding possession and use of item(s) sold herein. Consult your Federal, State, and Local Laws before ordering. By placing an order the buyer certifies that; he or she is of legal age; and that the item(s) will be used only in a lawful manner. LockPicks.com and/or its employees; and/or the employees, officers, board members, and/or stock holders of its parent assumes no liability associated with product usage. The buyer is liable and responsible for any loss, damage or expense of any kind, arising from the use or misuse of any item sold herein. Furthermore, by placing an order the BUYER certifies that LockPicks.com, its employees and/or the officers, board members, and/or stock holders of its parent will be acting in a lawful manner as described under U.S.C. Title 39 Section 3002a when mailing "locksmith entry tools" to the buyer, i.e. buyer certifies that he/she/it is one or more of the following: a bona fide locksmith; lock distributor; bona fide repossessor; motor vehicle dealer; lock manufacturer; or a motor vehicle manufacturer;, law enforcement officer; a bona fide fire fighter; a bona fide purchaser for one of the aforementioned; and/or a customer who will have this purchase shipped outside the United States, its possession, or territories; and/or a customer who is purchasing items that are not "locksmith entry tools." LockPicks.com or its parent will not deliver any locksmithing device through the mail to a person who cannot certify that he/she/it falls into one of the aforementioned categories. An interesting note from one customer... "Interesting, Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary says 'bona fide' means: not counterfeit or copied. And, the word 'locksmith' means: someone who makes or repairs locks."

That Is the only thing I see about locksmith tools being sold to you from lockpicks.com. Where exactly does It say what your saying?

You know, the only professionally made picks I've ever owned (until my recent aquisition of Falle-Safes) are SouthOrd picks. I really don't see what the problem is with them. I've picked an awful lot of locks with them. They have stood up. I've never broken nor bent one. They still work great. I'm still partial to my homemade picks, but the SO's are just fine by me.

Yeah, Falle Safe's gonna cost you about 300$ and you'll have to have them imported form the UK. Go with the Petersons, they're your best bet. Southord isn't bad, sounds like you were  even before you bent your picks if they were ruined that fast - didn't you just get them? Three sets right? I've used southords for a few years before I got my serious set but I never had one get all distorted like that....
