I just want to offer encouragement to everyone still involved in this. It would make me incredibly happy to see a solution formulated, but just that people have stayed on the case for this long shows an admirable tenacity.

Yup... I agree. But if a cash prize didn't spur innovation, I'm outta ideas.

Wait, has anyone tried buying the book on Lockpickshop (our sponsor) about cracking combination locks?
Orange, good idea, we never did do the clockwise over counterclockwise. One thing why we have diferent points is because were not all consistant with ourselves...but prhaps why its sticking more in othrs could give us a clue.

Sure, you just need to dial in the first digit of your house address, then the age you were when you first drank a beer (0 if you have not yet), and the numeric value of the first letter of your middle name (a=1, b=2, etc). The lock should pop right open.
.
.
.
Now that I got that out....
a) you did ask for help, but did not ask how we might help you
b) if you HAD taken the time to read this thread (I know it's long, but I've read it) you'd see that at this time, there has not been a credible method of opening these non-destructively. If you want to break the lock, it's easy, but I'll leave that to your own creativity.
P.S. You didn't clarify, but just in case....Don't open locks you don't own.

Posted: Thu Dec 08, 2005 5:37 am Post subject: MY DUDLEY LOCK IS BROKEN!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I could REALLY use your help!
My trusted Dudley lock, which I have used for over 10 years, seems to be stuck after I left it in my car on a really cold nite! The locking portion of the U seems to be stuck: it won't pull up, and it won't go back down into the rest of the lock. The dial won't move, either... although if I jiggle the U, i can get it to move a little bit (sometimes).
I've managed to tug on the U portion such that it's now free to pivot about the pivot point on the lock... but I still can't get it to go back into the lock (it seems that the locking portion is jammed).
Any ideas? I'd hate to get a new one, since I've used this same combinations forever!

I have an alternative, my friends have made a pick for the dudley lock. Basically u stick a piece of metal down the shaft and the shackle releases. My friend used some strong metal and it worked, but my aluminum foil version doesn't really work, tell me what kinds of metal u guys use and have success with...

Sounds similar to a problem i had back in highschool......look in the hole that the shackle fits down into, if you see a latch partially blocking the the passage, just grab a screwdriver and pry that S.O.B back open.

to my knowledge, a dudly can't be shimmed like with normal locking dogs. This is because it latches around the shackle, and not puts a ball in its place. Basically, this big black thing wraps right around it, instead of a ball keeping it in place. SO I'm curious about his shim your friend has. What does it look like, how is it used? Have you seen it in action with a dudly?>

The numbers which when I pull on the lock still allow
me to rotate the knob with degree of rotation between
them are:
58-2 5
3-7 5
9-13 5
16-20 5
22-26 5
27-32 6
33-38 6
39-44 6
45-50 6
51-56 6
From this I got the numbers that do not allow me to
freely rotate:
2-3 2
7-9 3
14-15 2
20-22 3
26-27 2
32-33 2
38-39 2
44-45 2
50-51 2
56-58 3
Is it the latter numbers that you guys call sticky?
Time to break it!

There is no reason why sticking points would tell you anything. You'll either have to brute force it, or come up with good way of measuring give in the shackle. The first one is obvious and no one wants to do it, and the second one, no one has managed to do, which is why this thread died. For the record, I gave it a shot earlier this week, and making such a device is not easy.
