Taking an American Lock Apart

Postby l0cked0ut » 17 Oct 2005 18:38

I searched the forums but I couldnt find a how-to for dissasembling a regular american deadbolt lock so i can rearrange the pins and such. Anyone know how to do this?

'American' is a brand as well as a nationality. If you were thinking of it as a nationality, with European locks being lever locks, then ... it depends. Usually what you do is remove the tailpiece attached to the back of the cylinder, unlock the lock (with a key, pick, or shim) then push it out from behind with a tool called a 'plug follower', which keep the drivers and springs from shooting all over the place. Then you can move the key pins around. To put it back together, reverse the disassembly proccess.

i guess what i meant was an american style lock (as in the country). The only european locks ive seen are the very thin style locks that look a little different than most locks I have seen here. Schlage and other foreign lock makers make locks for the US market, so they also count for what I am saying.

But thanks Gordon for the info
