"Real" picks make picking bad locks more difficult

Well, the locks I bought a few days ago are terribly easy to open with paper clips. However, since I recieved my picks I have struggled to consistently open the locks. Ive tried changing the torque Im applying, tried almost every pick. Ive been succesful with the feeler pick and raking, but its not consisent. I know paper clips wont cut it for good locks, but is this a mental thing or is there something I should be doing differently for really bad locks?

i dunno, it seems like the shape of the real pick (feeler pick) is making all of this more difficult.

Maybe you are over setting the pins with the picks since there is more room for play with a paperclip.

Perhaps grinding the tip of the hook down. I did that to one of my SouthOrd picks and it's now my main pick. I found that the hook was too deep to pick comfortably.

Was that the small or large hook Chrispy? I find the SO small hook pretty adequate for a lot of situations, but that large hook is a mystery to me. I've never met the lock that would accommodate that thing. It's like it's made for picking locks around corners....

You're supposed to buy a lot of them and make a set of progressive hooks. :lol:

yep i have that same southord feeler thats very large ive never seen a use for it. I finally figured out the new picks, it just takes a little more precision to open the locks but its all good.

I havent broken any locks or picks yet so thats good, but Im about ready to fling these BRIGGS padlocks out the window they are kicking my ass. They use spool pins on most of the pins and Ive spent about 2 hours trying to open one of these locks and no matter how good i think ive set it it just wont open. I will search the internet for a way to beat this but so far these spool pins are kicking my arse...
