Cant pick kwikset

Postby ksm1989 » 20 Oct 2005 16:11

I bought a brand new kwickwet deadbolt and tried to pick it, but it just wont work! It dosent feel like i can turn the lock very well with the tension wrench when i am picking it, so i dont think there is enough lip for the pins to rest on when i pick them. Are newer locks just harder to pick? (I can pick my garage doors lock every time and is is also a kwikset, only older and more wear and tear.) Thanks.

Perhaps you are just not concentrating enough on single pin picking. Give up for a moment and try raking it.

It sounds like maybe this is your first deadbolt type lock? However much it turns under tension is plenty. Remember that there is no lip at all until at least one pinstack is broken at the shear line. And only a miniscule little lip is required to hold the driver pins in place once you put them there. If you've been concerned that the plug doesn't turn enough or create enough lip, you've probably been applying a lot of tension thinking you could compensate for it. And that would really mess things up.

yeah, it is my first deadbolt because the regular knob is upside down, so i am not sure if that is even pickable (dont you need gravity to pull the pins down onece you pick them?). You are right, i was putting too much pressure on it, now i am able to get 4 of the 5 pins, but still no luck with that last one.

No, you can pick locks that are upside down. Ask our Euro members. They're upsidedown on just about everything. ;) When a lock is mounted with "key pins" down gravity will pull them downward once the pin is set, but this isn't purely necessary. If the lock is upside down, all that will happen is the key pins (often referred to as bottom pins) will rest at the shear line.

You may want to strip some pin stacks out of that lock and pick it with only 2 pins. Then work your way up to the 5 it came with.
