Defcon Videos .... Oldies but newbies may never have seen

Postby pickmonger » 26 Jan 2004 20:20

Every year in Las Vegas hackers hold Defcon ...a hackers convention.

Here are 3 lockpicking presentations from Defcon that were recorded in RealVideo Format. They range in size from 32 - 57megabytes.

V1RU5, Stephen Wadlow, Gurney Halleck and *Hobbit* 51meg 90min 1999
Lock Picking Explored Defcon #7 rtsp://media-1.datamerica.com/defcon/dc ... 7-video.rm

Michael Glasser CRL, aka Laz 57meg 60mins 2002
High Security Locks, and Access Control Products Defcon #10
rtsp://media-1.datamerica.com/defcon/dc ... C-X-LAZ.rm

Gingerbread Man 32meg aprox 36min 2002
Lock Picking: Techniques and Tools for High Security Defcon # 10
rtsp://media-1.datamerica.com/defcon/dc ... EAD-MAN.rm

Gingerbread Man also has a nice little 29 slide show file in sxi format.

You will need Open Office from openoffice.org to read sxi format (like powerpoint but its free)

from what I can tell, it's some streaming media thingie. Any possibility for this to be mirrored on a regular website?

Nah, that's the ".rm" part. I have a feeling the rstp is an address for a file sharing program; I just don't know which one.

Actually, the .rm stands for real media, sure it's a streaming format, but it can be hosted over ftp/http/whatnot... Here the service seems to be some streaming media server... Atleast thats what 5 seconds of googling tells me. Might be tied to a file sharing program too... Oh well.

The .rm does stand for Real media and the rtsp:// is Real Networks proprietary protocol for streaming Real media. There is a way to capture these streams, and I have done so. If I had suitable bandwidth, I would host them so that they could be downloaded using http or ftp, but I unfortunately do not. Instead, here is the link to the program which I used to download the streams so that I could view them(If you have real player on your computer and just wish to see these you could just stream, but I wanted an archival copy so I downloaded them). This is the program I used: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video ... _suite.cfm . The program itself is pretty easy to use and most people should be able to figure out how to use it. It works pretty flawlessly, and I hope you have success with it.

I have wasted enough time tonite having the program links not work, the stream go dead on me and all the rest. If someone gets the files on a http server please let me know :) Else I guess I will try again and again tomorrow hehe. Persistant bugger I am.

Arg downloaded a program call HiDownload it works well basically view the video in real media and then press record in HiDownload, i suspect the program above requires you to do the same thing. [I didn't RTFM :( ]

Basically I have it all working now, but there seems to be a queue or something on the videos. So I will keep trying :(

Defcon Videos ...... Me and my big mouth

Postby pickmonger » 27 Jan 2004 8:42

 Sorry for any confusion ...... Pickmonger forgot that not everyone would know how to view these.

The Defcon video links that I posted worked for users who knew the way to view it , ...... It requires a bit of technical knowlege.

1) These links are in RealOneStreamingVideo format. You need to open the link in a viewer that was designed to handle this format. (try RealOne Player V 2 )

in geek-speak "......... All content is streamed using Real Networks Real Server in TCP RTSP mode only (port 554). If you don't have a Real Player capable of this, you will need one. Note: The "PerfectPlay" option seems to mess things up, so I suggest you disable this feature...... "

2) You might not be doing anything wrong. The server may be busy or having technical problems.

3) For those that wish to first save the file on their HD and then view the captured file.....not all streaming video capture programs work with these links. Shareware CoCSoft Stream Down worked nicely for me. Streambox did not work for these files when I tried it.

I am sorry that Streambox didn't work for everyone. I'll try to upload these later tongiht so that they will be avalible tomorrow(I am on a dsl connection so it takes awhile). I'll post the link a little later tonight and by 6am(Central)
tommorow morning they should up ready for download.

Just a side note:
Do these guys in one of the videos refer to pins as knobs? It seems like they do, but maybe it's just me. Secondly, why even bother with the video? It is not like the h2k2 videos where the video actually helps.

Edit:
The server seems to be down or at least rejecting connections from my ip for now. I still have two of them to download. I have one down and will at least put that one up tongiht, and when I get a chance to put the others up then I will. The host I am uploading to has very very high bandwidth, but I will take these down after about two weeks of hosting them there.

Hi Marso,
