Bumping making it easier to bump?

Postby Pickermeapie » 21 Oct 2005 20:15

I have been trying to bump a Sargent 7-Pin for about an half hour when it popped. From there it got alot easier untill I was able to pop it the first time after trying. Am I wearing the lock down to the point that it makes it super easy to bump, or am I just getting better? I just want to make sure that I am not getting a false sense of confidence.

I noticed the same thing. Either you're denting the lock until the travel is just right (in which case you need to file off a little more of the shoulder) or you're just nailing the motion dead-on. Or something else, I dunno. Anyone smarter than me out there?

Try a different lock and find out.

It's also possible that you are deforming the the bump key into the "just right" shape. On the video it's repeated a couple of times that this seems to be the case, and once the key is deformed enough it becomes more successful.

What may be of interest to note though, and I have't quite worked out what is happening, is 1 or 2 of the locks I've bumped will no longer bump. This may be to too much damage to either the bump key or perhaps the process is in some way damaging the pin heads. Interesting to note the original keys still work the lock and the bump key will still bump other locks.
