whee..... new picks

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Just received an envelope from Varjeal...

, these picks are small... i gotta start looking at the rulers people put in their pictures for scale =)

There are lots of reviews of the Raimundo picks written by people far more skilled then me, so I wont bother. Just wanted to say how cool they are, and compliment Varjeal on his great services.

Did you get slim-line picks (seeing as your not in the U.K., I guess not.) or were you just expecting something bigger?

Be prepared to spend a heap of cash on new locks to open, once the Bogotas have gone through the ones you have already. :D

you Raimundo..... you.....

I picked up a cheap cylinder today on the way home from work, and spend a few minutes picking it with the diamond pick since i haven't had much luck in the past with rakes... ripped the lock apart and set it up with two pins to practice, then 3... just for fun, i popped the bogota in... opened... tried again... opened..

the phone rang, and i went to answer the phone, and it popped open almost on its own with me just pulling it out...

so after my call, i try my padlock... a few seconds to figure how to get around the biting... a few strokes and its opened...

this pick is cheating it.... its like the skeleton key dad always said was just on cartoons....

now i need a lock with some security pins to play with...

Thanks for the awesome tool Raimundo

That quote sums up the Bogota perfectly.

If I had Ray's expertise and Trump's business sense, the lock manufacturers would be bleaching their underwear.

question for other people with this pick,

Ive been using a very light tension, and slowly sliding the bogota over the pins, a bit slower then you would typicaly insert a key... definatly not fast enough to bounce the pins though, and it seems to open within a few passes.

What techniques are other people using?

gah... i must stop using this and go back to practicing with the diamond =)

must take the long road to picking... must take the long road...

Gentle lifting and rocking. Once a pin sets and firms up it wants to slide down into a valley so the peaks can work on the adjacent pins.
I love this tool for basic locks, but I'll admit that I have no luck using it with security pins. It's great for getting an inital false set with spools, but I havnen't found the technique for getting them opened all the way.

I can recall one occasion where I was up against a spool with only Ray's picks and was having a nasty time of it. I raked a few times, got the false set on the spool, then pressed my thumb up against the plug to hold the tension. I then swapped tools and used the Bogota Pick to lift the spool past the shear line and viola! Easy as pie.

Gordon:

I tried that just now, and it works great for me on my cheap locks. Is this the same as jiggling? And will it work as well for keys which have a hump as opposed to a dip? ie: locks with long pins in the middle and short pins on the ends, as opposed to short in the middle and long in the ends?
