Does anyone have a good way to identify the different types of mortise or lever locks in the uk?? im looking for maybe photo's of locks with identifying markings on them and such.. Im just starting out as an Emergency locksmith and the only thing im having probs with is all the diff makes!!
Im looking at doing a course with a guy called Martin Newton, he's the top guy on British Standard locks and had desinged picks for them, but rather expensive, and there are different picks for different types of lever curtain locks!! so to get the set will need a mortgage..

Cheers lads...

Get in touch with Justlocks.org.

They run a two day course which covers just about everything you'll encounter outside.

On top of that they'll give you a CD with pics of all the most common locks, headed paper, advice on setting up a business, list of lock and tool suppliers and some tools to get you started (mica, rap keys, pickset and lever wires).

I trained with them last year, it's well worth it, you'll learn a hell of a lot and the course is reasonable as well.

If you sign up with them say Hi to the trainers for me
sledgehammers make excellent back up picks!

just Goto http://www.safeventures.com and enlist on a course there. for two reasons. firstly they will teach you well, and i know that because justlocks is hiring teachers from safeventures to teach on there courses.

if thats not a good reason try this, if you get trained at safeventures you also get a licence, with which you can select and buy any or all of the tools sold by safeventures, which by anybody standards are the best in
the uk.

Ps you can also by Bs3631 lever lock decoders and a curtain wheel pick too , but only if you get your licence from them first. you see my point now, get trained from them :).
