hey all. im new to both the site and picking. i was reading some very useful information around here and was able to make a crude half diamond pick today. i then, using a guide to remove pins from a lock, took the #2 thru #5 pins out of a lock for practice. when i became able to pick it with just the #1 pin out, i wanted to add more but i cant! im having so much trouble getting the springs and pin drivers back in. is there something obvious im missing or some trick? any help would be greatly appreciated, as i dont want to lose this lock.

thanks!

it's officialy n00b day

the trouble you are having is normal, and you wil idealy need a pair of tweezers to put the pin in place, and your pick to hold the pins down untill you can use a PLUG FOLLOWER to keep the pins held down it place.

start from the furthest pins back you want to put in, and position the springs with tweezers, then put it in the hole. Pick up a top pin with your twezers, and put it onto the hole with your spring in - holding the pin aligned to the hole push down the pin into the lock housing, and keep it held there untill you can slide the pug follower over it.

Once all of the pins and springs are held down by the plug follower, you need to put the bottom pins into the plug correspoding to thetop pins, turn the cylinder about 12 degrees from it's neutral position (this will stop disaster trust me)... push the plug follower out from behind with the plug (still turned slightly) untill the plug follower falls out the other end. Now comes the easy bit - turn the plug back to it's neutral position, and you should hear clicks as the pins go to their correct positions.

Pat yourself on the shoulder, and have a pint - you have just repinned you lock :P

p.s: a plug folower is a solid cylindrical (round) shape, the exact same size as the plug - you can either make one out of some wood (my favourite) or get a pencil, and wrap it in electrical tape untill it's the same some as the plug.

I didn't even flame this time :)

I guess you could scrunch up some newspaper neatly, and make it into one.
a toilet role, a beer mat if you have one... or role up some cardboard tight to the right size/shape.

Making one out of cheap wood is easy - mine was made using a bit of reject wood, and a kitchen knife. Idealy wood chisels, but sounds like you don't have access to them... I'd suggest making a wood one because it will last you for longer, and you'll get some serious usage out of it when begin learning.

Something the same size/shape as the plug basicaly

illusion, once again thanks for your help. im sure your advice will prove very useful. i will probably try making one out of wood, as it sounds like the way to go.

thanks again!

lol - glad to help :P

Remember to have bottom pins in the plug in the same positions as the top pins - if you don't do this then your springs get ruined... Yes I DID do it to begin with - OKAY I DID IT SEVERALL TIMES!!

shrub thanks for your help. i was actually considering a magic marker, however the ones i have have rounded ends, which i believe would require some changing, so ill probably hit up the hardware store tomorrow to find something around 12mm diameter. thanks!

illusion if you could explain what you mean about "have bottom pins in the plug in the same positions as the top pins." im not sure i understand that. and how will the springs become ruined? thanks!

Doesnt matter what the end is like, a rounded end may even help you.

Illusion meant that if you have a bottom pin in position 1 you put the spring and then the top pin in position one, if you are leaving out places 3,4,5 then dont put springs and top pins in those positions

easy follower and you have it already

Postby keysman » 21 Nov 2005 21:55

just use the plug for a follower! guarenteed to fit!

be sure to turn the plug so the pins can't fall into the chambers, be careful not to drop any pins out of the lock!

have fun
