Free:2 HPC padlock code books

Postby AWC » 31 Jan 2004 22:01

I have to old Padlock code books by HPC. One of them is pretty thick. I think there from the mid seventies. I found them & don't need them. I don't want anything for them if anyone wants them. I was going to throw them away. I thought I would ask here first. Just pay for the shipping. I can get you more deatil's (pages, etc) if you want.

I would be very interested in them. In my spare time I have been trying to design a device that would allow someone to decode a pin tumbler lock once it has been picked, and the information in those books would be very useful. Do you think you could PM me with shipping costs to Houghton, MI?

FYI here is a link to what an up to date codebook would contain. Sounds most interesting for people who have key machines. Pitty I do not have one ;(

In response to the person who is trying to develop the decoder: 1. This book wouldn't really help you, just be mildly useful 2. It wouldn't be too hard to make this decoder as the bottom pins are already out of the chamber and when you push them up, they'll hit the walls so to speak. You just have to make the actual equipment, prehaps use fiber optic wire for this.

Would these books also work for master combination padlocks, you look up the serial number for the lock and it tells you the combination? I've heard that they make big books like these for combination locks.

Well let me tell you what I am trying to do. I would like to design a device that once a lock is picked you could measure the distance between either the bottom of the keyway or a certain ward to the pins that have been picked. It has to be a mechanical device and not an optical device that way the pins are sure to be pressed up against a fixed point. Right now I am just gathering ideas before I try to design it in IDEAS. After the design has been made im going to take it over to the machine shop, talk to the people in charge there as the best way to make it and try to build a prototype. Once that is done I have a friend who is studying to be an electrical engineer and Im going to ask him for help designing a digital readout and maybe a computer link. Once the measurements have been made they would have to be processed either through some sort of a code book or computer database before the cuts for the key could be determined. So why do I want the books? For this device to work I need spacing a depth diagrams for all sorts of locks. Also keyway diagrams would be very useful but only if they had measurements and tolerances on them.

That sounds interesting but i think if you make a device like this then it would have to work on only one type of lock since the pins are spaced differently from the next pin on each type of lock.

I never said it was going to be simple or even possible, I just said it was something I was trying to do. I still have a lot of math and physics to do on the design I have currently come up with and then check the part instances in IDEAS once I get it all drawn up. This isn't going to be something that I crank out in one night, its going to take some time.

About the pins being spaced differently, you should be able to tell which pin you are measuring, assuming you can do it while picking locks, and then record that measurement. Then you can check your measurements against a book of key depth cuts match your measurement to the closest key cut and decode the lock in a similar fashion.

If you have not tried to impression I would suggest you do so. You may not always be able to pick something you can impression. And hence make your tool useless. On that note I would suggest making a tool to read the lock while it was in the locked position. Either that or just learn how to get really really good at impressioning. BTW fyi I suck at both picking and impressioning atm. If this is just make something for the sake of it then fine. But I do not think depths would help you out. Of course this depends on how you do your measurements. Good luck on your endevours and please keep us posted.

You could be right, and I have been trying to learn how to impression locks but it requires tools that I don't have right now. The decoder is more of a project to see if I can do it. Im studying to become a mechanical engineer and I have access to alot of tools when I am on campus, I just thought it would be a good way to meet some people and learn a few new things. I'm just curious why everyone else wants these books.

Yeah I know :D The thing is up at school I don't have any files so I would have to order one. I don't know for sure what type of file is recomended but I have heard alot of people say #2 pippin or something along those lines. All of they places that I have seen online want about $34 or so for one of these. I also understand that impressioning is alot easier to learn with the proper tools and I don't think walmart is going to cut it this time.

AWC, could you give each book to two different people instead of both to just one person? Just a suggestion.
