...

How the heck do you get a key stuck in a lock?

Was it cut by hand or something, with bad angles? Even if it had completely the wrong bitting, it should at least go in and out fine, so long as it doesn't have any wonky cuts on it.

There's a good chance that a cut that had an angle on it less than 40 degrees could get stuck (depending on the lock I suppose).

Well, yeah. I'm wondering where such a key would come from.

He said it was the wrong key, perhaps it was the wrong type of key altogether, but the wards were close enough? A YA1E blank will go partway into a GEGE or a CES keyhole, and get jammed quite solid. A high cut at the end after a low cut could easily hold it fast.

stuckkey

Postby raimundo » 26 Nov 2005 9:56

One piece of stuck key magic no one mentioned was lubrication, sometimes a key will become stuck from lack of slipperyness, and the yankin with the pliers makes the 45 degree angle get dented to a 90 degree along the slope somewhere. I am totally surprised that the thin shims were strong enough to do the trick, I was gonna suggest using a thin guitar string, cut with a dykes, and inserted at a strategic angle to lift the pin and with a loop on the handle end so that the rough tip cut with the dykes could be rotated in the gap for a little bit of drilling to push through. but hey, the shims worked, so next time you get one of those tags, throw it in the tool box and don't open it until you need it. they also shim cylinder cores,
I have been thinking about those locks that have the sidewinder groove key and the pins that have no spings, my concept was to use some sort of light springs like tiny coil springs that have just enough power to lift the pins, but would be defeated by any hangup on shearline, perhaps I should think of a way to cut a fringe on some of those shims and see if they would do the job with very light tension and even lighter springs popping the pins up. Its just a concept, anyone can take it where it goes, I havent produced any prototype yet.

Stuck key

Postby Trentc » 26 Nov 2005 19:55

The key that got stuck was for a Warded lock so the first cut was a deep almost 90 degree cut. The pin just wouldn't ride up on it when trying to remove the key.
It was a really stupid move on my part. Just getting in a hurry.
