Quick question about learning.

Postby Woofcat » 8 Dec 2005 23:38

I own a small set of lock picks and have opened 3 different locks and spent time on learning each one and getting faster at it. I have read the MIT guide and some other texts on the subject and they all seem to go over the same thing.

I was wondering is the best way to learn to keep practicing on new locks? Also, will i gain anything from reading more and more books on lock picking, or should i focus more on the locks themselves when reading / finding books?

Any help would be great. Thank you all in advance.

What's your aim? In Marc MacYoung's words, "fuzzy goals lead to fuzzy results."

Are you trying to build skill? Then yes, expand to more locks -- but don't forget the ones you've already got. After all, not much point in perfecting a dozen new ones if you just forget the last dozen. Repin the ones you've got as well (maybe toss some security pins in there for a real gas) as well; call that .5 of a new lock.

Are you trying to learn more about locks? Then you'll enjoy digging through more resources -- although understand that much of what you find printed will be largely redundant, unless you specifically seek out certain information. ("This week I'm going to learn about Sargent and Greenleaf safe locks.") But if you're just picking for enjoyment, no, not much point in expanding your theoretical knowledge base.

Are you trying to enter a new profession? Well, that's a whole 'nother can of worms.

Well for the most part i do this for fun. Its something i found interesting, the same as my unicycle. So from what i gather since i am just out for fun i should try to expand to as many locks as i can. Thank you for taking the time to reply.

Sounds about right. If you're doing it for fun... do whatever you find fun.

Truly inspired. :)

No, really, I know how sarcastic that sounded... but I meant it. :D

If you want to get better, I suggest getting a practice lock and pins from http://www.varjeal.com/

You can get a good quality cheap cynlinder and then a set of security pins and whatnot, so that you can teach yourself to repin a lock and then work up to 6 pins, then 6 pins + serrated, 6+spool, ect all the way until you have a 6 pin lock randomly configured with spools, serrated, bottom serrated and regular pins and whatnot.

I got it back when he was offering it as U-key package(its the schlage cynlinder and security pin package), and it was a good way to get the exact feel of spools, serrated, ect

I think it helps alot with other locks when you know EXACTLY how pins and whatnot are3 suppose to feel and you aren't just lucking your way through stuff... now if I run into security pins or whatnot, I have a good idea of their qualities and what to do, that I dont think I would have if I had just bought a padlock with security pins and gotten good at opening it.

Something that will steepen your learning curve is a clear practice lock. This will allow you to better visualize what is happening inside the lock as you pick it and your brain will quickly learn to correlate certian pick motions with results inside the lock.
