Even though they may not be illegal to make copies of, it is not likely that any company does it just becuase it wouldn't be ethical. That's the whole point of patent protected cylinders, and for the most part respectable companies will respect the patent holder's wish.

could cast your own that would work temporarily, if you were determined enough ... search for key casting etc., and I'm sure you'll find a tidbit or two. ~Grit.
