I Unlocked my First

Postby CougarElite » 11 Dec 2005 16:31

Hey everyone,

I got into lockpicking a couple months ago but never actually unlocked anything and lost interest. Just yesterday, I became interested again. I created a tension wrench and a pick out of two bobby pins and I actually opened a Pin Tumbler lock! I couldn't believe it. It's pretty tough with bobby pins cause they dig into my fingers and it hurts pretty bad after a while.

Anyways, I'm thinking about buying a 14 piece set off of Lockpickshop.com. This may be a weird question but I'm just wondering if I will find it way easier to pick the lock with an actual good lockpick and tension wrench? Yep.. weird question but oh well. So what do you think?

Thanks

Useing the proper tools will of course always make the job easier but its no subsitute for practise, if your homemade tools are all quite good then there probably wont be any differance.

Yes it will be a TON easier.

If you can afford it the 14 piece set is good.

However, if you just want to learn to single pin pick, I'd say a hook and a couple tension wrenches would be sufficient especially after working with bobby pins and whatnot.

Unless you've ground in a hook into the bobby pin, you aren't really getting the strength and feedback needed to really feel the lock.

With a hook you'll be able to guide the tip of the pick better, have more comfort and also engage only 1 pin at a time...

Anyway, the pick will help more than the tension wrench imho, but since they are so cheap I say buy a set and see if it helps(it most likely will help a lot).

I'd get the 14 set because it gives you a few different picks to play about with, which makes it more fun than simply using the same hook to begin with.

proper tension wrenches will deffinatey help :P

i started off with paper clips and things of that nature too and now im into homemades. ive never owned a real pick or tension wrench but im shopping around for what i want. its good to be able to use makeshift things and go macgyver if needed but there is no substitute for proper tools. even the homemades i have which i spent alot of time on dont compare. some guys make them as good as comercially made picks but its not easy. i say get the 14 piece and if you really do get into it get some tools to make your own picks later. after learning how to pick alot of locks you will realize the tools in your 14 piece set arent the best hting for certain situations. being able to make your own picks is cheaper in the long run and you get the EXACT thing you want, and hey if you break one or mess it up your out 1/2 a hacksaw blade not a $30 pick set or more.

Hey thanks for all the helpful answers everyone! I think I'm going to order this: http://www.lockpickshop.com/p-Lockpick- ... -plus.html

It looks pretty sweet.. comes with the lockpick set I want, and locks to try them out on and a stand. That's like all the stuff I want. What do you all think about buying this?

Oh and I have another question I might as well put here: Do most vending machines use 7 or 8 pin tubular locks?

Thanks

Stay away from vending machine locks, as you probably will not find the silver bracelets that accompany opening them very comfortable.

Vending machines are slowly being moved away from tubular-style locks to high security Abloy, Medeco, and others.
