Recently everytime i quote a price im getting people haggling, i quote £100 they want it for £80. Just had a guy ring up who i did a job for on saturday, i quoted £107 to supply and fresh fit in 4 new mortice locks and he wants it cheaper, i dont budge so he agrees. Get to the house and it turns out hes already got some locks fitted so i only need to cut some keys. Cut 3 keys by hand to these original rim locks with nice side wards and chop in a mortice lock for £80 total, he offers me £50. He wanted more keys but i didnt have the blanks but pointed him to a local locksmith nearby. Hes rung me today expecting me to go around to him and cut him 3 keys as the ones he had cut elsewhere didnt work. I pointed out the callout wasnt worth it and hes like "i will pay you for the keys but not the callout". Thankfully i still havent got the blanks, its always these wannabe amatuer landlords doing this

My worst job was a call on a Saturday morning, I was in the workshop and trying to get something done and really did not want to be bothered. Anyway the caller was from the subcontinent and after a few minutes on the phone extracted information that suggested a couple of euro cyls and advised a price range. She had a bit of a grumble and said to come.
So I stop what I am doing and get down there only to find a yale No 2 and a 2" 5 lever sashlock, both locks pop rivited to the doors. I point out that these are not what she described and as such are not going to cost what I quoted - a shocked silence, and then " well how much then ? " So I requote. Got the usual " con't you do it cheaper " to which I say " no"
OK do it. So I spend a bit of time drilling out the rivets to get all the locks off to rekey them, I'mm just about to start when she says " I am only going to pay what the original quote was, not the new price " I did'nt even argue, just dropped all the locks (in bits) on the hall floor and left - the look on her face was priceless.

Ever noticed how every lock is either a chubb or a yale but when you get there its something way different ? My stupidist call to date is " can you fit a lock ? i want one that comes with keys" Well let me think about that, i may have to charge you more..........................

I didn't realise that when you quote for a job, that included the keys.
They didn't tell me that on my £1500 ebay course.

It's all about the tension . . .

The other thing the ebay course doesnt say is that you have to include the screws to hold the lck in as well
Oh yes and that a bird cyl isnt a super duper high security lock.
I must admit i find it hard understanding what lock there on about over the phone all i get it well the key thing has jaggy things along it, luckily ive got both types on my flyers so i now just say is it the one on the left or right, thats a good tip for any future advertiseing, they are afterall looking at your advert to phone you.

I've had a few customers ask if the new lock comes with new keys
And half way through fitting a couple of new euros I had one customer
tell me he didn't want them as they weren't exactly the same coloured
brass and silver as his handles , needless to say his cylinders ended
up on the floor and I was gone, accidently taking the fixing screws with me.

What, screws as well ?
You're cutting into my profit margins, once I've given 60% to reactfast, thats only £240/hour for me.
And what proof do you have that Bird cylinders are not High Security, just 'cos my drill doesn't take long to open them, we've only got your word for it.

It's all about the tension . . .

Not to worry, I charge them for replacement drill bits.
Did I mention I have a door replacement company as well, cheap rates . . .
