Postby Wade » 14 Dec 2005 21:25

the other day I was working on my @#$&*!'n... wonderful little Schlage 5-pin that has hicked my @$$ for a couple of months...

I needed a plug follower... I found one, it is a Garrity AAA stainless steel pen flashlight!! it fits perfectly!!

...just wanted to share that with yall, in case you need a idea for a flashlight/plug follower combo.

I like drill bits myself. One of these days I'll get around to making some proper ones.

The flutes don't go all the way back, there's an area that is unfluted for the chuck. The bit's made for smaller chucks won't work though.

Hmmm....

Silly me. I've been using a plug follower, as a plug follower. Perhaps we need a new section for these "McGuyverisms". Members could cast these pearls of wisdom before......us.... . It could end up being a good resource for people who can't afford to go out and buy everything they need. With a couple of wiper blade inserts, a Dremel, some sandpaper and a Garrity AAA flashlight almost anything is possible!!

A drill but? I dunno, it seems like the pins could fall into the gaps in the bit, couldn't they?

You would only use the unflutted section that is tightened in the drill chuck. This is a solid area of the drill bit so the pins will stay in the shell and cannot fall anywhere.

I use 1/4" drive deepwell sockets. Lots of sizes to choose from if you've got both metric and SAE sets...

you wouldnt use the drill bit by itself. Didnt anybody take IPC. While operating the drill at the proper speed, the entire surfuce of the plug hole is Effectivly Occupied thus no pins will fall out in the spaces on the drill bit. Common guys its simple.
