Howdy, I just ordered a pair of cheap handcuffs (8$) and i recently asked the customer support if they were resistant against hitting attacks to pop the lock. They didn't help much but then I looked at some more expensive S&W cuffs that said they had "double lock configuration". So I was just wondering if any of you guys knew what that meant. Thanks for reading the post. Links:

On common S&W handcuffs there is a pin that, when pushed in, requires the key be rotated one way to unlock the supplemental locking mechanism, then rotated the other way to unlock the cuffs.
If you have a search on the forum you'll find lots of handcuff info.
Good luck!

Like DB said, you have to unlock it the other way (Usually counter-clockwise) to disengage the double lock and allow the ratchet to be lifted. When the cuffs are double-locked, the cuffs cannot close more. This prevents them from tightening too much. If you're picking them with a paper-clip, you sort of have to hook the pick around the post to get the double lock. It's a pain, but doable under the right circumstances.

And if you take the handle off an appropriately sized bulldog clip, it pretty well works like a key, so picking is not a problem - double lock or not.

Some things may be pick proof, but everything can be bypassed....

when you rachet the hand cuff into place, the pawl with three teeth clicks down on the rack, the key or any wire can reach through the keyhole and lift the pawl off the rack and open the handcuff. but if the double lock pin is pushed in, it moves a metal block over the pawl, and the pawl cannot be lifted, this also prevents the handcuff from becoming tighter, your gf will like that part.

The DVD, Lockpicking for the New Millenium, has a chapter on bypassing handcuffs, including the secondary lock that doesn't allow additional tightening and, I believe, unlocking when locked. I believe he uses a hook pick to bypass them both.

Yes he does use a Southord Hook in the Video. Any piece of metal bent like a key can be used to pick handcuffs (hence Chrispy's Bulldog Clip idea)
The way to be safe is to never be secure.
