Mountain Security Padlock

Postby logosys » 20 Jun 2004 19:14

Ok, I got this thing for $2.36, thinking it would be a good introduction to padlocks, but it's pretty handily kicking me where it hurts. It's a brass padlock, that, by the looks of the key has 6 pins, and by the feel of it might have a spool pin (Their deadbolts have at least 2 spool pins).

About the lock: Solid brushed brass body, 2" wide, U-shackle, manufactured by Mountain Security.

Does anyone have any insight?

Don't worry about what the key has, feel the amount of pins for yourself. It sounds like a 140 knock to me, but the 140s don't have six pins. After you pick spool pins a while you'll get good at recognising them.

hmmmm, the mountain padlocks i have ran into have been 4 or 5 pin. I had one I used my padlock killer on to try it out and it had no spools in it but was a 5 pin. I dont know what is going on with the one you have but I have picked about 7-10 different mountain padlocks and all have opened with no effort. Some would open just inserting the pick. :?
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

I think I have that model of padlock. Mine has 5 pins none of which are security pins. Keep trying and good luck.

Postby pdoke » 29 Dec 2005 19:10

im rather new to this but i have opened a few master #3's, a Magnum #240(Made by Master) and some other offbrand deadbolts. but im having a hard time with this MountainSecurity Padlock i just bought from walmart. from your description and price im pretty sure its the same one. i was wondering if you've had any luck? and if so can you give me any tips? i.e. what pick did you open it with?

Thanks, Paul

too late

Postby pdoke » 2 Jan 2006 16:29

i tried everything for a couple weeks since i bought lock and couldn't get it. i think there might have been something wrong with the lock because i couldnt ever get more than one or two pins to set. i'm going to buy another one this week and play with it some more. i cut it apart and it didnt have any security pins. so i dont know what was wrong with it. thanks for the advise i'll keep that in mind with the next one.

If the key operated the lock it is doubtful that there was something wrong with it. Some cheaper padlocks are just nasty to pick even without security pins.

The rule of thumb is the cheaper the lock, the easier the pick. However, this is not always the case. You may have just encountered one of those locks that is so poorly manufactured that it actually makes picking more difficult. S'been my experience anyway.

Cheers!

well, thats the thing... the key opened it but some times it sort of stuck and i had to jiggle the key a little in and out or turn the plug back and forth a little before it would open. but your probably right you've been doing this alot longer than i have. thanks for the advice im planning on running to the store soon to pick up a new one. then we'll see if i have any better luck

I picked up one of these a few weeks back from WM the 2" solid brass body

and ive been picking over a year now and this was the first padlock that ive ran into that you cannot feel the pins bind at all, and like others mentioned sometimes it wont even rotate without a lil work.

I could rake it in seconds so I know its not difficult just seems the quality is so bad you cannot feel the pins.

here are some pictures of mine

Exactly what mine looks like.. At first I was unable to feel the pins bind to, Then I pretty much just went into pushing pins up 1 by 1 and finally got it... I hate that lock... So i drilled into it and now it doesnt work :)

Getting angry at locks is never good... If I can't pick a lock, I always feel better knowing I can boil it's metal with an oxy-acetylene torch.

Usually when those thoughts cross my mind I have to give picking a rest...
